Artist:Shimomura Kanzan 下村観山 (1865-1949)
Description: Rock and bamboo, color on silk. Born in Wakayama prefecture, pupil of Kanō Hōgai and Hashimoto Gahō. Graduated in the first class of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. His subject matter from Japanese legend and history; known for his line drawings inspired by the 12th century scrolls from the Kōzan-ji. His style has traces of Western-inspired realistic detail and considerable Rinpa influence. Shimomura and Kimura were both recruited by the well-known government official and artistic leader Okakura Tenshin (1863-1913). Okakura had a great passion for art and developed Japanese art during the Meiji period, during which he established the Tokyo Fine Arts School and the Nihon Bijutsuin (the Japan Art Institute).
