Artist:Kawase Hasui 川瀬巴水 (1883-1957)
Description: Snow at Tōshō shrine, Ueno (Ueno Tōshōgū no yuki). Published by Sakai/ Kawaguchi in 1929. Numbered 85/100 Around 1929 Hasui got into a conflict with his publisher, Watanabe over the payment of copyright. Hasui and many of his colleagues briefly moved to other publishers and boycotted Watanabe. Most of them returned to the fold in 1933. This print is an example from the Sakai/Kawaguchi firm which was successful for about 7 years and then disappeared from the scene. Characteristic of publishing practises of this firm is their numbering of the prints. They printed a first edition of only 100 impressions, which were numbered on the back with a seal. Having sold this exclusive first edition, they produced two more editions, one of 350 and one of unknown size. The concept of numbering is completely foreign to Japanese publishers and it is clear that this was introduced to satisfy the Western clientele.
