Kitazawa is seen as the founding father of modern manga and the first professional cartoonist in Japan. Features comments on historical and current events and political cartoons and lighter forms of entertainment, such as cartoons portraying scenes from daily life. Cover illustration 'New Women in sorry plight'. Political commentary on the strict regulations of the Japanese police against 'moga' (modern Japanese women). Also features a large two page color-illustration titled 'Yuan's great ambition'. Satirical commentary on Yuan Shikai (1859-1916). Shown is how Yuan is chasing his ambition to reach the throne (becoming emperor of China), at all costs.
