Description: A black lacquered tea box (cha bako) decorated with a stylized wave pattern and bright blue forget-me-nots (Myosotis). The stylized wave pattern is done in chō shitsu: a technique in which layers of lacquer of different color are applied to a thickness of three to seven millimetres, and a design is engraved on the surface. With original box, reading ‘craved lacquer technique, forget me not pattern, tea box’ (chō shitsu wasurenakusa mon, cha bako). *Kitahara Hisashi was born in 1939. He was involved in a restoration project concerning the famous Kinkakuji (Golden) temple in Kyoto, which commenced in 1986 and was finished the following year, with Kitahara leading the lacquerware department. Kitahara has exhibited his work at many venues, such as in 1981 at the Kokuten in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. His work has been lauded with several prizes such as by the Chushin Art Museum in Kyoto.
