Description: Tyrian purple and gold patina vase. This vase is an example of Tenmyō imono: Tenmyō cast ware. Currently headed by Kurisaki Tsugio, the Tenmyō workshop in Sano (Tochigi prefecture)specializes in traditional cast copper-alloy wares. Originating in Osaka, the workshop dates back to the Heian period. Tenmyō wares are held in high esteem, Tenmyō kettles were used by leading tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū (1522-1591). The workshop has also made metal fittings, still extant, for a campaing or repairs to the Tōshōgū shogunal mausoleum in Nikko in 1683. With original box, signed and with artist seal.

Reference:Kusaraki Tsugio’s bronzes are characterized by their patina of deep tyrian purple mixed with gold. This is inspired by the classic Chinese ‘gold-splash’ bronze technique. In the 17th and 18th Century bronze incenseholders were decorated with gold spots. Tsugio is still active today and works in Sano City in Tochigi Prefecture. In 2004 the artist received the ‘Traditional Culture Award’ by Tochigi prefecture, certifying him as a traditional craftsman.
