Artist:Itō Tōzan 伊東陶山 (1871-1937)
Description: A ceramic green glazed flower vase, with two stylized elephant trunks-ears. Seal in bottom of vase. Dated approx. 1920. Including original wooden box, with signature and seal. *Born in Zeze in Shiga prefecture. He first studied Japanese style painting, but at 20 became an apprentice to (and was later adopted by) the potter Itō Tōzan (1st generation). He opened a kiln in Yamashina in 1918 and made efforts to resuscitate the Zeze style of pottery. The following year he took the name Tōzan 2nd generation, was absorbed in the study of enamel, and while following the traditional path of the colourful Kurita style, he established his own unique style with a modern touch. In 1923 he participated, and played a leading role in the establishment of the Kyoto Association of Industrial Arts. Exhibited at the Teiten. The line unfortunately died with the third Tōzan in 1970.
