Description: Extraordinary mallet-shaped black lacquer tea caddy, decorated with gold lacquer featuring imitations of the famous ‘chōjū-giga’ (frolicking animal scrolls). The scrolls dating to the 12th and 13th century are icons of Japanese arthistory and picture animals behaving mischievously. On the natsume we see the famous scene featuring a hare falling backwards, roaring with laughter, frogs dancing and wrestling, and a monkey running off with a hat and a twig. The natsume has a brown lacquer bottom and lid and black lacquer interior. With original box signed ‘Sanao’ with artist’s seal. Inscription reads ‘chōjū-ga, chaire (frolicking animal scrolls, tea caddy). *Second generation of lacquerware artisan working in Echizen Lacquerware Village, highly-skilled and valued prestigious lacquer artisan, has exhibited frequently and won many awards.
Signed:on the bottom in gold lacquer: Sanao and on original box 'Sanao' plus artist's seal.
