Artist:Moriya Shōtei (1890-1972)
Description: Black lacquer natsume, decorated with maple leaves and classic Rinpa style swirling stylized lines representing water. Signed on the bottom: made by Shōtei (Shōtei saku). With shifuku (silk pouch with drawstring for the tea caddy) with famous pattern called enshūdonsu 遠州緞子. This pattern features all takarazukushi symbols ( treasure collection 宝尽), a set of seven treasures or lucky charms that are often used a decorative design and are said to bring good fortune. Signed original box, inscription: ‘spring and autumn, nakatsugi’ (Shunjū nakatsugi). *Born in 1890 in Kyoto as Moriya Otosaburō, moved to Tokyo at seventeen to become a student of lacquer master Shirayama Shōsai (1853-1923). It is thought Shōtei became an independent artist after the passing of his teacher Shōsai in 1923. From 1942 onwards he specialized in lacquerware objects used for the tea ceremony. Flora and fauna are a recurring subject in his work, often using the technique of togidashi maki-e.
