| Stockno.: | K24-046 | Artist: | Sone Shunji | Description: | Red lacquer kōgō (incense container) with a carved out motif of maple leaves. Underneath lies a motif of carved out rapids overlapping each other, reminiscent of the traditional seigaiha (wave) pattern.
Executed in the Tsuishu 堆朱lacquer technique: A type of carved lacquer, in which several layers of vermilion lacquer are applied and patterns are carved into them.

*Exhibited his work in 1988 at the prestigious 35th Japan Traditional Crafts exhibition (Nihon Dentō Kōgei ten). Studied woodworking under living national treasure Kōdō Otomaru (1898-1997). Independently studied carving and coloring techniques. His work is always a mixture of his woodworking and woodcarving skills combined with his lacquering skills. Often his lacquer objects contain motifs from nature.
