| Stockno.: | K24-044 | Artist: | Kawabata Kinsa V (1915-1999) | Description: | Brown-red lacquered jikirō (lidded container used to serve confectionary at the tea ceremony) decorated with various traditional Japanese instruments. On the lid a biwa with plectrum, on the sides and body of natsume we see two types of Japanese drum (taiko and small Japanese hand drum called Kotsuzumi), a koto (zither), a Japanese flute and a Sho (recoginizable by the seventeen bamboo pipes) which is used in gagaku (traiditional Japanese court music). Tamenuri is used for colouring (lacquering technique that uses a coloured-lacquer undercoating and a transparent-lacquer topcoat).
With original box and second outer box, inscription on original box reads: musical instruments, gold and silver lacquer tamenuri jikirō (gakki maki-e tamenuri jikirō).
*Kawabata Kinsa V was born in 1915 as Miyoshi in Nara prefecture.
