Interior of black lacquer. Chabitsu are containers used for the tea ceremony, usually round in shape with a lid, where one can store the tea ceremony utensils together. Items that are typically stored in a chabitsu are a small teakettle, tea cups, tea saucer and boiled water that has been cooled.
Aizu lacquerware is made in the Aizu region of Fukushima prefecture.
The technique used here is one employed in Aizu lacquerware called kinmushikuinuri which uses rice chaff to create a pattern. Rice husks are scattered over a black lacquered surface, and the next day the husks are brushed off to create an intricate pattern. After drying, the surface is polished with a whetstone after which lacquer coatings follow. The pattern that appears looks as if an insect has eaten its way through the material, hence the name kinushikuinuri (gold insect-eating lacquer).
