Echizen-yaki is produced in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, and characterized by simple and powerful design, fired without the use of enamel. The subdued colours are created by natural glaze from firewood ash, baked at high temperature. Echizen ware are a form of earthenware between pottery and porcelain, also called yakishime (semi-porcelain). Echizen is the location of one of six famous ancient kilns in Japan.
Hekisha-yu, 'blue sand glaze', is often used by this potter to transform the surface of the ceramic by the firing process to create a distinct blue, textured "sand-like" effect. This natural glaze effect is a product of the high-temperature firing, gravity, and the specific local clays used, resulting in mesmerizing patterns.
