Description: Painting on silk, c. 1863. This painting on silk gives a view of daily life in Edo around 1863 in the Nihonbashi district. Back in the time this was the city's liveliest area, with as a highlight Edo's most famous bridge (Nihonbashi: Bridge of Japan), giving the area its name. Not only the iconic bridge is pictured, but also its adjacent riverbank with the characteristic white warehouses and the endless stream of boats coming and going. The surrounding bustling merchant streets are pictured from above, with the countless rooftops showing its considerable size. Painted in great detail, all sorts of entertainment, business and trade are taking place.
