Description: Painting on silk of a packhorse driver leading his horse over a small bridge through a thick pine forest. Painting dated October 1931. Lovely painting with small touches of red, creating a pointilistic effect. With unsigned box. *Born in Toyohashi in Aichi Prefecture. In 1917 began his training under Matsubayashi Keigetsu 松林桂月(1876-1963). Throughout his career he has continuously exhibited his work at the Teiten, Shin Bunten and Nitten. In 1949 for the fifth time he won the special prize at the Nitten. He made many commissioned works. In 1960 the Japanese Nanga-style school was created, and Engan was installed as its director.
