Description: Painting on silk titled ‘Two mountain villa’s in clear weather’ ('山家二晴雪). A snowy landscape, in which a figure is seen carrying two baskets on a pole through the snow towards two mountain houses. A black bird is pictured in the distance. With original box, titled ‘Two mountain villa’s in clear weather’ 山家二晴雪 on the lid. Inner lid: signed Kokkan Odake (国観尾竹) with artist seal. *Nihonga artist born in Niigata prefecture, given name Kamikichi, younger brother of the Nihonga painters Odake Chikuha and Odake Etsudō. Studied under Western-style painter Kobori Tomone. Kokkan specialised in historical subjects. Like his brothers, occasionally also produced kuchi-e. Won several prizes, and in 1909 won the second prize at the Bunten Exhibition. After his work and that of his brothers was rejected for the 7th Bunten exhibition in 1913, they rallied against the politics of government sponsored exhibitions and organized their own exhibition: ‘Rakusenten’ (Exhibition of Rejected Works).
