Artist:Ishikawa Toraji 石川寅治 (1875-1964)
Description: Landscape oil painting in the Yōga tradition titled on the back ‘Suburb spring scenery’ (郊外春色 Kōgai shunshoku). The area pictured is the Narimasu area in Tokyo, as indicated on the back in parentheses (成増 附近 Narimasu fukin: Narimasu neighbourhood). From the bird’s perspective two figures are painted as seen from the back, an adult and a child (father and daughter?) walking along a small residential road, bright green and yellow signalling spring. Clever usage of perspective, with in the far distance some more roofs pictured, a high horizon, and a large willow tree in the front framing the composition. Occasional black lines, such as curved lines giving the hills more depth and black contour lines to make the roofs stand out. Toraji has made extensive use of the impasto technique in this composition, giving the painting an expressive and energetic feel. The painting comes in an antique frame without glass. Gallery Kabutoya sticker on the back. Located at the famous Ginza dist
