Description: Scroll painting on silk of a group of red-crowned cranes. Four cranes stand together in a group, with a small baby crane huddled in the back. Two more cranes are seen flying closeby. Cranes are considered an auspicious animal, and it is probably not a coincidence that this painting features seven, as seven is seen as a lucky number in Japan. With box. *Painter born in Kyoto in 1822. Studied under Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843) one of Kyoto’s leading artists of the Shijō school. Specialized in the genre of kachō-ga (flowers and birds) and portraits.
Signed:Tōsai (another name the artist used) Gyokuhō, with artist’s seal.
Size:image: 113.2 x 51 cm, including mounting: 204.5 x 63.5 cm.
Condition:The painting does not hang completely flat but the edges turn inward
