Also called the Maruyama School, Shijō is a Japanese school of naturalistic painting. Founded in the late 18th century by Maruyama Masataka (Ōkyo). Amongst his pupils were Matsumura Gekkei, called Goshun, who resided on Fourth Street (Shijō), in Kyōto, from where the movement took its name. After graduating from the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting, Keiju studied under Imao Keinen (1845-1924). Keinen became his father- in-law and gave him the character ‘Ke’景 for his art name.
