Description: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi 月岡芳年 (1839-1892) Fake Murasaki, Countryside Genji (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji 偽紫田舎源氏). Published by Akiyama Buemon in in 1884. Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji, written by Ryūtei Tanehiko (1783-1842), was a very popular satirical work during the late Edo period. It was a parody based on the famous 11th century classical work by Murasaki Shikibu, The Tale of Genji. Ryūtei’s work became widely adopted in prints and kabuki. Here Genji is shown with his lover, Tasogare. A demon pretends to be his wife Futaba, but is actually Tasogare’s mother Shinonome. When Genji discovers her true identity, he tells her that the only reason for his affair with her daughter was to regain the family sword. Overwhelmed with shame, Tasogare and Shinonome both committed suicide.
