Description: No. 47. Edo, Snow at Honjo, Matsumura’s wide, Hayakawa Tōemon’s daughter and Motojima Kazuzaemon, the series Snow moon and flowers (Setsugekka). Published by Kobayashi Tetsujirō on 11 March, 1885. The wife of Matsumura and the daughter of Hayakawa have joined a night attack on the Honjo mansion of Kira Yoshinaka, the climax of a vendetta when the followers or Asano Naganori sought revenge for the humiliation of Asano by Kira. Asano, Lord of Ako, was obliged to commit suicide. These dramatic events of 1703 became the basis for many Kabuki plays, including the most famous one ‘Kanadehon Chushingura’ (Model for Emulation, Treasury of the Loyal Retainers).
