Description: Kojima Takanori engraving a poem on a cherry tree (児嶋高徳詩題桜樹). The story of Kojima Takanori and Emperor Go Daigo is told in the Taiheiki Monogatari, the Japanese historical epic written in the late 14th century. Kojima Takanori (1312-1382) was a loyal retainer of Emperor Go Daigo (1288-1339). The emperor was sent into exile by the Hōjō family. Takanori tracks the location, diguises himself as a peasant and writes a classical Chinese poem of loyalty as a message to the emperor on the bark of a nearby cherry tree. Although the Emperor was heartened by the poem, it was two more years before he was reinstated. The poem recounts how the King of Yue was saved by his loyal retainer, Huan Lei. 天莫空勾踐 Ten Kōsen no Munashu suru nakare, 時非無范姦 Toki ni Hanrei nake ni shimo arazu. Published in August 1883.
