Description: The actor Bandō Yasosuke as Hige no Ikyū ('The bearded Ikyū). Gauffrage is used to gives his beard and hair a detailed texture. Published by Ebisuya Shōshichi (Kinshōdō) in 1863. The role of Hige no Ikyū (literally, the bearded Ikyū) appears in popular plays set in the Yoshiwara, featuring the young dandy samurai hero Sukeroku. Courtesan Agemaki is in love with Sukeroku, while Ikyū is one of her wealthy clients trying to win her over. Ikyū is het villain in this narrative. In this portrait he holds Sukeroku's sword, which he has stolen from him.
