Artist:Koizumi Kishio 小泉癸巳男 (1893-1945)
Description: No.22, Monkey bridge in winter (fuyu no saruhashi) from the series 'One Hundred views of new Japan' (Shin Nihon hyakkei). Published by the Japan Woodblock Print Society (Nihon hanga kyōkai) in dec. 1939. With original folder, with Nihon Hanga Kyōkai label, and a label inside giving information about the print and a statement by the artist. More than thirty artists collaborated in this series, featuring famous places and modern urban life. Produced by artists from the Creative Print Movement, which began early in the 20th century by artists who designed, cut and printed their own woodblock prints. Due to WWII this series came to a halt in 1941 and reached 39 designs, Japanese authorities fearing the prints might provide too much information to enemies. Most prints have a numeral in red of black in the lower margin, this print carries nr. 14. This is supposedly an impression number. Each edition was about 50.
