Description: Merchants, (inset upper right Shō 商). From a four-part series called The four classes (Mitate shinōkōshō 無名:見立士農工商).An aizuri-e Published by Kawaguchiya Chōzō c. 1830. From a series of four, each showing a woman and in the cartouche a member of one of the four classes. A courtesan with paper towel in her mouth is standing next to a lamp, straightening her obi. Her kimono is decorated with swallows. Behind her the black shamisen box. The cartouche shows a a merchant sitting on the upper floor of a (tea) house, enjoying a drink.
