Description: No. 27 Ashida (芦田), from the series Sixty-Nine Post Stations of the Kisokaidō (Kisokaidō rokujoku tsugi no uchi 木曾街道六十九次之内). Published by Sumiyoshiya Masagorō in August 1852. Ashida Station. The sorceress Nyogetsuni (later to become Takiyasha) performs a magic ritual in the snow, followed by an assistant carrying a severed head on a branch with white paper streams that call to mind the white zig-zag shaped shide paper streams used at Shinto ceremonies. A bird-shaped inset shows a mountainous village.
