The Kyoto artist Shōmin was an important figure in the Showa period (1926–89) metalwork. His genius in the craft became apparent early in his career. He was consistently displayed at the Bunten/Teiten/Nitten National Exhibitions from 1941, where he was later honoured as a judge, and received the Hokusho Prize. He also acted as a judge for the Kyoten Kyoto Art Exhibition and Otsu City Art Exhibition and his works were purchased by the Japanese government for presentation to foreign and Japanese dignitaries.
