Description: Sunset on Furutone river (Furutonekawa sekiyō), from the series Eight Views in the Suburbs of Tokyo (Tōkyō kinkō hakkei no uchi) Published by Watanabe Shōzaburō in 1939 Kasamatsu Shirō started out as a Shin hanga artist, who studied under Kaburaki Kiyokata. He caught the eye of publisher Watanabe in 1919 at the Bunten exhibition and continued to collaborate with him until this series. Only four of the originally planned eight prints were finished. After WWII, Shirō ceased to work with Watanabe. He was more interested in Sosaku hanga and started to design, carve and print his work all by himself. For a short period he collaborated with the publisher Unsōdō for a small amount of landscape prints.
