Artist:Toba Kōnin I 初代鳥羽硬認 ( or Toba Shinichi鳥羽清一)
Description: Brown lacquer vase with beautiful sheen and a subtle red pattern which is referred to by Toba artists as keikan (鶏冠), cockscomb. With an elegant gradation of maki-e gold sprinkles and protruding black rims spiralling around the bottom of the vase, which are decorated with small gold specks. With tomobako, reading: diamond shaped flower vase with stone sealed lacquer (kongō ishimenuri kabin). This does not only refer to the shape, but also to the lacquer technique used and discovered by the artist. Signed Kōnin, with artist seal. The seal on the upper right corner reads ‘intangible cultural asset’ (mukei bunkazai). The lid of the tomobako has an inscription, which is signed (not by the artist) and dated: Shōwa 33 (5 Nov 1958). Included is a short explanation on the technique of dry lacquer (kanshitsu) and some information on the artist. *Toba Kōnin was designated an intangible cultural asset by Shizuoka prefecture.
