Sanka hailed from Yamamoto, in Nagano Prefecture. He went to study metal casting in 1915 under the famous Tsuda Shinobu. From early on he was regularly to be found among the prize winners at the various competitions, for example at the Teiten of 1931,32,and 33 shows.
