Artist:Nakamura Sōin
Description: Large natsume (ō-natsume), with ribbed exterior. Interior of silver lacquer, decorated with a selection of seashells and seaweed in raised lacquer. With paper box and original box. Original box signed ‘Sōin’ with artist’s seal reading Sōin. Inscription reads ‘stag seaweed, seashells, lacquer, spinning top large natsume’ (miru kai nuri gomasuji ō-natsume (gomasuji is the name for a pattern on round objects of horizontal spinning lines.) Famous maki-e artisan from Kaga, Ishikawa prefecture. Great-grandfather was Kawagita Koichi (川北浩一1902-1977), a famous woodworking artisan. Studied under his father, Kawagita Ryōzou (川北良造b.1934), a woodworking artist and a living national treasure. Sōin specializes in maki-e lacquer and natsume.
