Original box signed ‘Sōin’ with artist’s seal reading Sōin. Inscription reads ‘stag seaweed, seashells, lacquer, spinning top large natsume’ (miru kai nuri gomasuji ō-natsume (gomasuji is the name for a pattern on round objects of horizontal spinning lines.)
Famous maki-e artisan from Kaga, Ishikawa prefecture. Great-grandfather was Kawagita Koichi (川北浩一1902-1977), a famous woodworking artisan. Studied under his father, Kawagita Ryōzou (川北良造b.1934), a woodworking artist and a living national treasure. Sōin specializes in maki-e lacquer and natsume.
