Description: Black and vermillion lacquered fresh water jar (Suichū 水注 also known as mizusashi) for the Japanese tea ceremony. This style is referred to as Suichū and has the form of a pot with a handle on the rear side of the body. This minimalistic style of lacquerware is called negoro-nuri (根来塗). The name derives from Negoro-ji, a temple in Wakayama prefecture where during the 14th century this technique originated. The minimalistic lacquerware consists of an undercoat of black lacquer, covered by a coat of red lacquer that usually is not adorned with motifs or any form of decoration. Over time the vermillion lacquer coating wears away creating an unique beauty with the black lacquer layer breaking through. Nowadays this look is deliberately achieved by polishing the vermillion lacquer until patterns of black become visible: resulting in a minimalistic but remarkable lacquer style that has both an organic as well as elegant feel. Signed: by artist on the bottom in red lacquer. No box.
