Description: Natsume in which the woodgrain is clearly visible and enhanced, with decoration of ivy and autumn grasses and plants in raised gold and red lacquer. Interior of nashiji (lacquer technique using sprinkled gold powder). With original box, signed Sōyō, with artist’s seal. Inscription on box reads ‘Ivy and autumn grasses, natsume’ (Tsuta akikusa natsume). *Lacquerware artisan comes from a family of lacquer craftsmen since the Edo era. He has carried on the Wajima City-based family business by infusing inherited traditional techniques with his own ideas. Together with his brother Yamagishi Shōdō (b. 1965), they established a lacquer laboratory in 2000 where they developed a new technique to create ‘eternal lacquerware’. Coining their technique shin shitsu 芯漆 (lacquer core) their works consist of solely lacquer material, from core to surface.
