With original box, signed Sōyō, with artist’s seal. Inscription on box reads ‘Ivy and autumn grasses, natsume’ (Tsuta akikusa natsume).
*Lacquerware artisan comes from a family of lacquer craftsmen since the Edo era. He has carried on the Wajima City-based family business by infusing inherited traditional techniques with his own ideas. Together with his brother Yamagishi Shōdō (b. 1965), they established a lacquer laboratory in 2000 where they developed a new technique to create ‘eternal lacquerware’. Coining their technique shin shitsu 芯漆 (lacquer core) their works consist of solely lacquer material, from core to surface.
