Artist:Mae Shigeo
Description: Black lacquer natsume, decorated with intricate traditional pattern seigaiha (wave pattern), executed in the lacquerware technique chinkin-bori (沈金彫 gold-inlaid carving). A pattern is incised into a lacquer surface, after which raw lacquer is rubbed into the grooves. This function as an adhesive for the gold dust or gold leaves pressed into the etched areas. Incredibly clever design combined with mesmerizing detail and high technical mastery of the chinkin lacquerware technique. With cloth and original box, signed Shigeo with artist's seal. Inscription reads: chinkin, ō-natsume (large natsume) seigaiha pattern. *Wajima-lacquerware artist, specializing in chinkin-bori. Studied under living national treasure Mae Taihō (前大峰1890-1977), famous for his technical skill in executing the chinkin-bori technique.
