Artist:Okamoto Yōsai (b.1932)
Description: Vermilion lacquer natsume decorated with a plum tree in black lacquer set against a moon in white lacquer. A portion of the plum branch cuts in front of the moonscape, which the artists has cleverly rendered in gold instead of black lacquer. This natsume is characteristic of Yōsai’s most valued skills: combining vermilion lacquer with black lacquer to create a striking contrast and his well-proportioned and clever spatial compositions. The complex unusual shape of the natsume forms a nice contrast with the minimalistic decoration and attests to the high technical mastery of the artist. Interior of black lacquer. With original box, signed ‘Yōsai’ with artist’s seal. Inscription on the box reads ‘Plum tree, moon, natsume’ (Ume tsuki natsume) *Okamoto Yōsai is a lacquer artist born and living in Kyoto, but he also has a studio in Yamanaka, Kaga (Ishikawa prefecture). He specializes in Wajima lacquer and the majority of his work consists of utensils for the tea ceremony.
