Description: Black lacquer natsume, decorated on the top of the lid with two cranes in gold raised lacquer (taka maki-e) holding the branch of a maple tree in their beaks, the wings executed with beautiful inlaid-mother-of-pearl. The body of the natsume is decorated with stylized clouds, executed in gold lacquer contour lines. Black interior. Signed on bottom: Shōichirō. With cloth and box signed by artist ‘Shōichirō, with artist’s seal Shōichirō. Inscription on the box reads: mother of pearl, natsume, pine tree eating cranes, maki-e (raden natsume matsu kue tsuru maki-e). Size: 6.8cm (height),6.7cm (width) *Tasaki Shōichirō is a maki-e artist from Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. When he was just fifteen years old he started studying lacquerware, and studied maki-e under lacquerware artisan Ichigo Iccho -后一兆 (1898-1991). In 1996 he was awarded the medal of honour with purple ribbon (prestigious award bestowed upon individuals for their artistic or scholarly achievements).
