Description: Black lacquer large flat natsume (hira natsume) decorated with Fuji in red lacquer, with stylized clouds of raised gold, with specks of inlaid-mother-of-pearl and gold. Bottom of nashiji (sprinkled gold), interior of black lacquer. With original signed box, Gahō, with artist’s seal reading Gahō. Inscription on box reads ‘Large black flat (hira) natsume with crimson red fuji with gold lacquer (maki-e) (Aka Fuji maki-e kuro ō-hira-natsume). *Maehata Gahō is a traditional Japanese lacquer artist who is renowned for creating exceptional traditional utensils used in the Japanese tea ceremony and utilizing Rimpa school motifs in his lacquer works. Born as the first son of Maehata Shunsai. the eighth head of the Maehata household, Maehata Gahō received his training in lacquered tea utensils from Murata Dōkan, ishiji-nuri lacquer from Nakamura Chokan, and Kaga Maki-e from Hoya Bisei.
