Description: Black lacquer hira (flat) natsume, decorated with two winter sparrows parched amidst camellia flowers. Several lacquer techniques and materials are used: raised gold lacquer (taka maki-e) for the birds and flowers, while the camellia flowers are composed out of small specks of inlaid eggshell. Inlaid mother of pearl makes up the center of the flower. Interior and bottom of sprinkled silver (nashiji). With original box, inscription reads: winter sparrows on camellia, maki-e flat natsume (tsubaki ni kansuzume maki-e hira natsume). *Icchō was born in the Ishikawa prefecture. During his lifetime he quickly became one of the top valued craftsman of Wajima-nuri lacquerware. He showed his work at the prestigious state-sponsored Nitten Exhibition six times, exhibited at the Japan Crafts Exhibition and won the Supreme award at the eight edition of the Contemporary Art Exhibition. He trained the lacquer artisan Tasaki Shōichirō (b.1931), from the young age of fifteen years old.
Signed:on the bottom: ‘made by Icchō’ (Icchō saku) and on the box: signed ‘made by Icchō’ (Icchō saku), with artist’s seal reading ‘Icchō’.
