Description: Black lacquer natsume decorated with flying plovers and calligraphy in raised gold lacquer (taka maki-e). Silver interior. With signed cloth and signed original box, inscription reads: natsume, plovers (natsume, chidori). * Wakashima Takao was born in Ishikawa prefecture. At eighteen years old, he dived into the world of Wajima lacquerware. In 1954 he became a student at the Keizuka Lacquerware Workshop producing Wajima lacquerware. In 1958 he continued the lacquer family business. He studied the lacquer technique of kyūshitsu under living national treasure Yūsai Akaji (1906-1984) . He has won several awards: in 1978 at the National Lacquerware Exhibition the Grand Prize, in 1983 the Encouragement Award at Japan Traditional Crafts Association. Since then his work was selected for the exhibition seventeen times. At eighty years he withdrew participating at the prestigious exhibition and started to work completely independently.
