Description: Red lacquer natsume, decorated with a folding fan composed out of eight peacock feathers made out of multi-layered lacquer coatings (blue and green) with intricate gold feather details. A coiled rope attached to the folding fan playfully ends in a tassel on the body of the natsume. Interior and bottom of sprinkled gold (nashiji). With original signed box, inscription reads: eight-fold feather folding fan, maki-e, large natsume (yae hane ougi maki-e ō-natsume). On the lid of the box an inscription reads that this is ‘A celebration of turning 80 years old’ (Yasoju kinen 八十寿 記念). The eight-fold fan is also a mitate on a special phrase can be used to celebrate someone turning 80 years old : Sanju 傘寿. made up of the character of umbrella (kasa 傘) and the character shu 寿 which carries the meaning of longevity, age and celebration. It seems likely that this natsume was made in honor of Sōya Hisada turning eighty years old (who also signed the lid), thus would date to 2005.
Signed:inner lid with red lacquer by Sōya Hisada (1925-2010), the 12th generation Grand Master of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony. On box by artist: Saijō Issai, with artist’s seal reading Issai.
