Description: Black lacquer tebako (small box to hold valuables) decorated with an egret. Woven texture on the lid and sides, with the egret placed in a gold cartouche and the bird rendered in small pieces of in-laid egg shell. Gold interior. With original signed box, inscription: egret (sagi), tebako. *Itō Hiroshi was born in Kyoto in 1930, real name Hironobu. He studied polychrome lacquer art at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts and graduated in 1953. He continued his lacquer studies under lacquer artist Kakutarō Yamazaki (1899-1984) up until 1957. In 1953, he was awarded first prize at the Nitten (Japanese Fine Art Exhibition in Tokyo): in '66,'68 he won the Special Award , '83 the Member Award). He also won a series of other prestigious prizes. In 2005, he received the prestigious "First Prize" from the Japanese Academy of Fine Arts for 60 years of achievements.
Signed:inner lid lacquer box and on original box: ‘made by Hiroshi’ (Hiroshi saku) with artist’s seal reading Hiroshi.
