Description: Red lacquer kōgō in the shape of a kaki (Japanese persimmon). Including very life-like branch and crumpled leaves on top. High technical skill, in combination with the kanshitsu (dry lacquer) technique; using a linen cloth soaked with lacquer, which is pasted onto a mold made of wood, clay, or plaster. Black lacquer interior, signed inside and on bottom. With original signed box, inscription: ‘real kanshitsu handmade product (moto kanshitsu tezukuri no hin), kaki decorated (kazaru) kōgō. *Wajima-lacquer artisan Kawagishi Mitsumasa, works using secret techniques which he learned from his father, passed down and originating back to his grand-father back in 1899. In 1950 Mitsumasa started working independently. In 1970 he became the third generation Kawagishi. The lacquer family specializes in using the dry lacquer technique (kanshitsuzō) to convincingly imitate and transfer natural textures such as leaves, wood and the skin of fruits onto lacquerware objects.
