Description: Black lacquer natsume decorated with morning glory and ivy in gold, red, green and purple lacquer. With original signed box, inscription reads: morning glory (asagao) , maki-e, black (kuro) middle sized natsume (chū-natsume). *Okamoto Yōsai is a lacquer artist born and living in Kyoto, but he also has a studio in Yamanaka, Kaga (Ishikawa prefecture). A particular aesthetic that recurs in his work and that is also highly valued by collectors is his lacquerware in which he combines vermilion lacquer with black lacquer, forming a striking contrast. He specializes in Wajima lacquer and the majority of his work consists of utensils for the tea ceremony (such as natsume and mizusashi) and tableware (such as bowls). He uses traditional motifs such as flowers and animals and is praised for his well-proportioned spatial compositions.
