Description: Hira (flat) natsume, decorated with Sumiyoshi shrine (Osaka), pine trees, taiko bridge, with exquisite mother of pearl inlay on pine trees. Gold raised lacquer makes up most of the decoration, interior and bottom of gold nashiji (sprinkled gold). A stylized Rinpa-style stream flows under the bridge, with tiny gold flake decoration. High level of detail and craftsmanship in this extraordinary natsume. With original signed box. Inscription reads: Sumiyoshi [shrine], maki-e , hira natsume (flat natsume). *Wajima lacquer artisan, studied for five years under maki-e master Masaru Tanaka. In 1980 selected for the Japan New Craft Exhibition for the first time, where he exhibited four times total. In 1989 he exhibited at the prestigious state sponsored Nitten exhibition. In 1992 he won the highest prize at the Wajima City Art Exhibition. The following year he won the New Craft Prize at the Japan New Craft Exhibition. In 1994 he won the Grand Prize at the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
