Description: Purple natsume decorated with two camellia flowers, one in red lacquer and one with inlaid mother-of-pearl. Inner lid decorated with a budding camellia flower in gold and red lacquer. Interior and bottom of black lacquer. With original signed box, inscription reads camellia (tsubaki) natsume). Signed: on bottom of natsume ‘made by Icchō’ (Icchō saku), as well as on box Icchō saku plus artist’s seal. *Icchō was born in the Ishikawa prefecture. During his lifetime he quickly became one of the top valued craftsman of Wajima-nuri lacquerware. Icchō specializes in maki-e; a technique to decorate lacquerware by sprinkling gold or silver dust particles over wet lacquer design. Especially his natsume are now held in high esteem. The characteristics of his work are his strong sense of colour, - with sometimes quite bold usage of vibrant colors- , and composition. He showed his work at the prestigious state-sponsored Nitten Exhibition six times.
