Artist:Hishida Shunsō (1874-1911)
Description: Painting on silk of a flying white heron, with snowflakes and snow covered bamboo in the right margin. With double box. Inscription on lid of the box reads ‘white heron’ (shirasagi). Inner lid reads ‘brushwork by Shunsō’ (Shunsō hitsu) and is also signed ‘Taikan’ by friend and fellow artist Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958). Comes with a certificate of authenticity by the artist’s eldest son Hishida Haruo(1902-1987), who also functions as an expert and judge of his father’s work, his authorisation signed (plus artist seal) and dated February 1975. *Pseudonym, real name Hishida Miyoji.Born in Nagano prefecture, graduated from the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō.One of Okakura Tenshin's pupils along with Yokoyama Taikan and Shimomura Kanzan. Played an important role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga.In 1898,joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin (non-governmental artistic organization in Japan dedicated to Nihonga (Japanese style painting).
