Artist:Tamaoki Raiseki (1898-1978)
Description: Realistic painting on silk of a tiger. The head is done in great detail, with the body and tail painted with more vague brushstrokes, creating a sense of depth. The tiger is attentive of its surroundings, indicated by its piercing gaze towards something outside of the composition, pointed ears and the tail that is bent slightly upward. White paint is applied thickly, in a bold and striking manner to highlight the tiger’s whiskers and eyes. The body of the animal is covered with small brushstrokes in different shades of brown, red and orange following the contours of the body, creating a convincing fur texture. With original box, signed by the artist ‘made by Raiseki’ with artist’s seal. Inscription reads ‘picture of a ferocious tiger’ ( mūko no zu). *Self-taught artist that came to be known for his excellent tiger paintings. In 1970 he established the Japan Animal Painting Association 日本動物画協会 (Nihon dōbutsu-ga kyōkai), devoted to the development of animal painting.
