Description: Landscape painting on silk, titled ‘summer valley’, showing a stream running through a green valley. Painted in gentle soft colours and from a frog’s perspective. Signed on the bottom right, Kōgyō with artist’s seal. Comes with double box, original box titled ‘Summer valley’ (natsu tani) and signed on the inner lid, with artist’s seal. Comes with certificate of authenticity authorized by the Tokyo Art Club, dated 9 september 2016. *Japanese-style (Nihonga) painter, born in Akita. Influential artist, began his artistic career as a Kano painter, studying with Hidetoshi Komura before leaving for Tokyo in 1888. There he studied with Suian Hirafuku, a Murayama-Shijo painter, and later with the Nanga painter Hakuryu Sugawara. He thus studied many styles of both Japanese and Chinese painting and developed his own eclectic style. His landscape paintings have a soft paintery feel with delicate pastel colours and are Japanese- style but show significant Western influence. He was known as
