*Japanese-style (Nihonga) painter, born in Akita. Influential artist, began his artistic career as a Kano painter, studying with Hidetoshi Komura before leaving for Tokyo in 1888. There he studied with Suian Hirafuku, a Murayama-Shijo painter, and later with the Nanga painter Hakuryu Sugawara. He thus studied many styles of both Japanese and Chinese painting and developed his own eclectic style. His landscape paintings have a soft paintery feel with delicate pastel colours and are Japanese- style but show significant Western influence.
