Description: No. 38 Ariko weeps (Ariko no Naishi) from the series One hundred aspects of the moon (Tsuki hyakushi). Published by Akiyama Buemon, September 6th 1886. The tragic figure is Ariko no Naishi, a lady who’s unrequited love for Tokudaji no Sanesada (a senior councillor) led her to drown herself in Lake Biwa. The tragic lovestory is told by her ghost in the Noh play Ariko no Naishi. The poem in the cartouche reads: hakanashiya nami no shita nimo irinubeshi tsuki no miyako no hito ya miru tote How hopeless it is it would be better for me to sink beneath the waves perhaps then I could see my man from Moon Capital
